SWIMMING

The Southern Section swimming finals begin Friday at the Belmont Plaza Pool in Long Beach. Division I starts it off with the Irvine girls out to knock off defending champion Ventura Buena. With a team led by Olympian Amanda Beard, the Vaqueros are loaded with talent and have a good chance to succeed. In the Division I boys’ competition, Mission Viejo is no longer a sure thing; Foothill, Irvine and Santa Margarita could take the title. Santa Margarita’s Philippe Demers will be attempting to break a national high school record in the 100 butterfly. In Division II, Laguna Hills will be defending its boys’ and girls’ titles. Division I finals start at 7:30 p.m. and Division II begins at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Division III begins at 11 a.m. Saturday.
