It’s a Women’s World at Country Club

“Dynamite” and “The Cheetah” seem like fitting nicknames for prizefighters.

But “Baby Doll”?

Well, consider this is women’s boxing. Besides, as Bridgett “Baby Doll” Riley says, looks can be deceiving.

“A lot of girls look over at me at the weigh-in and say, ‘Look at her. I’m going to kill her,’ ” said Riley, a 5-foot-4, 120-pound fighter from Sherman Oaks who has a 3-0 professional record. “But once that bell rings, look out.”

Riley, 24, will have a chance to do more damage tonight at the Reseda Country Club in the first all-female boxing show in California.

There will be eight women’s bouts on the program, which will be televised on pay-per-view. Riley, a former gymnast and five-time world-champion kick boxer, faces Teresa Arnold in an eight-round bantamweight bout sanctioned by the fledgling International Female Boxing Assn.

The first women’s boxing match in California was held in 1979, but only in recent years have women’s fights surged in popularity.

As of May 1, only three women boxers were licensed through the State Athletic Commission. Thirteen received their licenses at Friday’s weigh-in and all 16 will be at the Country Club.

“I always dreamed about being on a big boxing card,” Riley said. “This is the next step.”
