Expos Overcome Nine-Run Deficit

The Montreal Expos proved they can never be counted out of a game. Even Rod Beck, the National League’s leading relief pitcher with 13 saves, couldn’t stop the Expos.

Montreal overcame an early nine-run deficit and defeated the San Francisco Giants, 14-13, Friday night at Montreal.

David Segui drove in the winning run with a single in the ninth inning.

“On the bench, every one was saying, ‘We’re gonna win, we’re gonna win,”’ Segui said. “We were still down by six or seven at the time. That was the attitude. We were going to win.”

Barry Bonds and Glenallen Hill hit home runs as the Giants took an 11-2 lead after three innings. It was Bonds’ ninth home run and his 25th at Olympic Stadium, the most by any active opposing player.

Montreal came back with four runs in the fourth, three in the fifth and three more in the sixth for a 12-11 lead. Hill’s run-scoring single capped a two-run seventh that put the Giants ahead, 13-12.

The Expos tied it in the eighth on a single by Vladimir Guerrero, a walk and Chris Widger’s single. Widger set career highs with four hits and five RBIs.

In the ninth, Mike Lansing led off with a single against Beck (2-2) and Rondell White sacrificed. Segui followed with his fourth hit of the game, giving the Expos their fifth consecutive win. Segui also had a leadoff home run in the second.

Ugueth Urbina (2-2) pitched one inning of relief for the win.

“If you were in our dugout, you knew they meant business,” Expo Manager Felipe Alou said. “Tonight was another example of the respect this team deserves.”

Hill’s two-run homer and two errors by rookie right fielder Guerrero helped the Giants score five times in the first. Bonds hit a three-run homer in a six-run third inning.

Darryl Hamilton went four for five with three RBIs for the Giants. Hill had three hits and four RBIs.

Trailing, 12-11, Rick Wilkins drew a leadoff walk from Dave Veres in the Giants seventh and took third on two wild pitches. Mark Lewis walked and Omar Daal relieved. Hamilton and Hill hit run-scoring singles.
