Nazi, KKK Symbols Alleged at Citadel

In a report to be aired Sunday, CBS-TV’s “60 Minutes” says The Citadel, the publicly financed military college in South Carolina, has a tradition of displaying Nazi and KKK symbols. Citadel officials refused to be interviewed for the report, but its interim president, Clifton Poole, said charges that Nazi symbols were displayed on campus “lacked any basis in fact.” The program said it has obtained photographs and videos taken this spring that show a Nazi SS symbol on a student’s cap and a picture in a locker of a boy giving the “Heil Hitler” salute. A photograph in a 1977 yearbook shows cadets in KKK garb surrounding a black man with a noose around his neck, it said.
