Sixteen-Year-Olds Need Schooling, Not Cars

“Driving Parents Crazy” (May 19) went a long way to present the dangers beginning drivers face. The statistics such as “16-year-olds have seven times as many car accidents as 24-year-olds” should get people to thinking about changing the age at which our children should drive cars.
I am in favor of raising the age when driving is allowed to 18 or earlier if graduated from high school. I can think of no real value of driving for a high school student. In fact, driving a car in high school detracts from the impact of the school. When kids get cars, they also have to get jobs to pay for insurance, gas and repairs. Instead of focusing on their real job, going to school, they concentrate on their automobiles.
