Death of Oxnard Boy Is Termed a Homicide

OXNARD — Authorities say a 14-month-old Oxnard boy who died after suffering a fractured skull while in the care of his baby sitter was a homicide victim.
Dr. Ronald O’Halloran, county medical examiner, announced the finding Saturday in the death Thursday of Carlos Borunda.
The child’s father, Miguel Borunda, 24, expressed shock when he learned that authorities believe his child died at the hands of another.
“Oh, man. That’s terrible,” Borunda said Saturday night.
The child spent a week in the pediatrics intensive care unit at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital before dying shortly after 2 p.m. Thursday. He was admitted to the hospital May 29, after sustaining what police called suspicious head injuries.
Authorities were made aware of the boy’s injuries earlier that afternoon by the child’s baby sitter. She called from a house in the 3800 block of San Simeon Avenue in Oxnard to report the boy had accidentally fallen, Oxnard detectives said.
From the start, detectives said the teenage baby sitter gave conflicting stories on how the child was injured.
No arrests have been made.
Borunda said he has no idea how his son was injured, saying he was not home at the time.
The investigation is continuing.
