Re the May 25 killing of 7-year-old Sherrice Iverson: Isn’t it amazing that if you ever tried to drop a slug in a slot machine, peek at a blackjack card or try to sneak a crap chip, the eye-in-the-sky cameras in Nevada casinos will catch you, but a man could play with a young child and walk into the women’s restroom and not get caught?

* Regarding the death of the 7-year-old child in a Nevada arcade, Leonard Jackson of the First AME Church in Los Angeles felt that the hotel should have provided better security for the arcade users, despite the fact that there were signs posted warning parents of the need to supervise their children (May 30). As an African American mother, I disagree with him. What is needed is a recognition that those of us who have children are responsible for them!
Would the Rev. Jackson leave a 7-year-old anywhere unsupervised by an adult relative or guardian at nearly 4 a.m.? Instead of playing the victim, why don’t we stand up and play the advocate? It doesn’t matter how many security guards, etc. that arcade had. It seems as if she was targeted as a child who had a parent who didn’t care enough about her to come get her at a reasonable hour.
Let’s not let those kids be anybody’s kids.
