He Remembers It Well

The articles by Bob Baker and Nona Yates (“Tomato Mania,” June 1) contained phrases like “red cardboard ovals” and “I hate store-bought tomatoes.” I may be giving away my age, but it was not always like that.

In the mid-1950s I was able to get first-class tomatoes from a supermarket. In particular, I remember the long-gone Mayfair market. Slowly, the quality of ordinary tomatoes started to go downhill. I then discovered cherry tomatoes. Again they were first-class. Then they went downhill.

I think that there may be a story in why first-class tomatoes can no longer be grown commercially. How much more would it cost to restore old store-quality tomatoes compared to the current red cardboard tomatoes?
