Wiebe Still Hot With Putter; Leads Kemper Open by Three

Leader Mark Wiebe had five birdies in a bogey-free round of five-under-par 66 Saturday, giving him a three-round total of 202 at the Kemper Open golf tournament at Potomac, Md.
Wiebe holds a three-stroke lead over Mike Springer, who needed a sponsor’s exemption to play in the tournament, and is four strokes ahead of Nick Faldo.
He made three birdie putts from 25 feet and two from 15 feet. Wiebe, who has played 42 consecutive holes without a bogey, will be shooting for his first tour victory in 11 years.

Gil Morgan shot a six-under-par 66, for a two-round total of 135 and a one-stroke lead over John Bland in the BellSouth Senior Classic at Nashville.

Lisa Hackney shot a four-under-par 68 to take a two-stroke lead after the third round of the LPGA Oldsmobile Classic at East Lansing, Mich.
Auto Racing
Billy Boat and Davey Hamilton, driving for A.J. Foyt, apparently finished 1-2 in the IRL’s True Value 500K in Fort Worth after leader Tony Stewart crashed less than two laps from the finish.
Indianapolis 500 winner Arie Luyendyk finished third, but complained that he deserved the victory because of a scorer’s error. He tried charging into victory lane and was knocked down by Foyt.
Treadway Racing filed a protest on behalf of Luyendyk and Scott Goodyear, saying Luyendyk was the winner and Goodyear finished higher than ninth as listed.
Gil de Ferran, driving a Reynard-Honda, set a track qualifying record to earn the pole position for today’s Detroit Grand Prix. De Ferran had a fast lap of 109.483 mph.
Ivan Stewart won the SCORE Baja 500 off-road race, finishing in 9 hours 48 minutes. Corky McMillen was second, Bob Gordon third.
Soccer
Nigeria became the first country to qualify for the 1998 World Cup in France, defeating Kenya, 3-0, at Lagos, Nigeria. Later in the day, Morocco also clinched its spot in the final field of 32 by defeating Ghana, 1-0.
Scoring its first victory on French soil in 48 years, England defeated France, 1-0, at Montpellier on Alan Shearer’s 86th-minute goal in the Tournament of France.
A goal by Colombia’s Antony De Avila and some excellent saves by Tony Meola earned the New York/New Jersey MetroStars a 1-0 victory over Sampdoria of Italy in front of 19,826 at Giants Stadium. . . . John Harkes had a goal and an assist as Washington D.C. United (10-3) routed the Colorado Rapids, 5-0, in front of 16,790 at RFK Stadium. Tony Sanneh, Clint Peay, Richie Williams and Jesse Marach also scored. Colorado dropped to 5-8. . . . Giuseppe Galderisi, Alan Prampin and Evans Wise scored goals as the Tampa Bay Mutiny (6-6) defeated the Columbus Crew, 3-1, in front of 10,152 at Tampa, Fla. Marcelo Carrera scored for the Crew, which has lost five in a row to drop to 6-7.

Spurred by LaTarsha Stroman’s world-leading time of 50.60 seconds in the 400 meters, Louisiana State won its 11th consecutive women’s title at the NCAA track and field championships at Bloomington, Ind. Arkansas rode Seneca Lassiter’s victory in the 1,500 to its sixth consecutive men’s crown.
Tampa Bay Buccaneer defensive tackle Warren Sapp was charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession after a late-night traffic stop in Tampa in which police said they discovered 12.7 grams of marijuana in the car. . . . Receiver Michael Haynes signed a two-year, $1.8-million contract with the Atlanta Falcons. . . . The St. Louis Rams signed receiver Torrance Small to a one-year, $500,000 deal, including a $100,000 signing bonus.
Dave Schultz, shot and killed last year at the Pennsylvania estate of John E. du Pont, was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame at Stillwater, Okla. . . . Former World Boxing Assn. lightweight champion Joey Gamache was arrested and charged with a misdemeanor for allegedly assaulting a woman at his home in Lewiston, Maine. . . . I.H. “Sporty” Harvey, who won a court battle in 1954 to become the first African American boxer to legally fight a white opponent in Texas, died in Los Angeles after suffering from heart disease. He was 71.
