Garden Grove Pacifica 3, St. Lucy’s 0--Glendora St. Lucy’s pitcher Kristina Gandara was in a no-win situation.
Walk Toria Auelua and load the bases with no outs, or pitch to the hot-hitting catcher, who had already stung the ball twice off the right-hander.
Gandara initially chose to pitch around Auelua in the sixth inning. After tossing three consecutive pitches outside strike zone, she had a change of heart. Gandara nicked the outside corner for a strike on her next pitch, and then gave Aeulua a pitch she couldn’t resist.
Aeulua, a sophomore, hit Gandara’s next delivery into left field, scoring Diana Barreras and paving the way for Pacifica’s to defeat St. Lucy’s in the Division III championship game.
Amanda Freed tossed her ninth no-hitter of the season, improving her record to 20-0. Pacific improved to 31-1.
St. Lucy’s fell to 25-8.
