Unseeded Upland Beats Top-Seeded Foothill

On a night when Anaheim Foothill needed its hallmark defense the most, it wasn’t there.
On a night in which the nation’s second-ranked team was supposed to win the Southern Section Division I title, it didn’t.
Instead, unseeded Upland, in the finals for the third consecutive year, took advantage of top-seeded Foothill’s uncharacteristic defensive performance and scored a 3-1 victory before about 2,500 at Mayfair Park.
Foothill (29-3-1) was ranked second in the National Fastpitch Coaches Assn., poll, but didn’t play like it.
