Another Title for Haneef

SACRAMENTO — Tayyiba Haneef ended her sensational high school career with another state title Saturday night.
Haneef, who led Laguna Hills to Southern Section and state girls’ basketball titles this spring, cleared 5 feet 9 inches on her second attempt to win the high jump at the state track and field championships at Sacramento City College.
Lisa Underhill of Vista Rancho Buena Vista failed her three attempts at the height and then Haneef asked that the bar be raised to 5-11, a half-inch better than her personal best. But Haneef clipped the bar on all three attempts.
Haneef won Southern Section Division III and Masters Meet high jump titles, but went no higher than 5-8.
“This is the second-best feeling I have had this year,” Haneef said. “It’s not the same as winning the basketball title because we worked as a team for so many years together on that.”
Ashley Bethel of Mission Viejo finished fourth in the 100-meter high hurdles (13.82), seventh in the long jump (18-4 1/2) and eighth in the high jump (5-4).
Sarah Higham of Mission Viejo finished fifth in the pole vault with a jump of 11-4, five inches off her personal best set in Division II qualifying.
Allyson Marquand of University ran sixth in the 3,200-meter run with a personal best of 10:39.17
