Re “Stealth Lobby Drives Fuel Additive War,” June 16:
If you think the oil companies care whether they use MTBE or ethanol, think again. I remember building a rail siding into our terminal in Las Vegas for the purpose of receiving tank cars of ethanol to be used in the oxygenating of gasoline supplied by one of the oil companies. The oil company? Arco, of course, the largest supplier of MTBE in the U.S. Apparently the incentive for using ethanol was too great to be ignored. Guess who supplied the ethanol.
