Foundation Awards $1.1 Million to Youth Sports Programs

An additional $1.1 million in grants from the 1984 Olympic Games surplus has been awarded by the Amateur Athletic Foundation of Los Angeles, with the largest amount, $150,000, going to Los Angeles Boys and Girls Clubs for gymnasium construction.
Including the new grants, almost $80 million has been issued in the last 13 years.
Other sizable grants included $94,972 for sports programs for 2,000 youngsters in five schools near USC, $58,055 for equipping girls softball teams in the inner city, $41,169 for introducing gymnastics programs in the Pico-Union and South Central Los Angeles and $50,000 to build a youth sports programs near Mona Park in Compton.
Twenty small grants of $5,000 or less also were awarded to specific sports programs throughout Southern California.
