Shabazz’s Condition Worse, Hospital Says

The condition of Betty Shabazz, critically burned in a fire 2 1/2 weeks ago, has worsened over the last few days, according to the hospital where she is being treated. Her problems “are being treated, but they are clearly of a life-threatening nature,” said Jacobi Medical Center in a statement. Shabazz, the widow of Malcolm X, has been in extremely critical condition since June 1, when she suffered third-degree burns over 80% of her body in a fire at her Yonkers apartment. Her 12-year-old grandson, Malcolm Shabazz, is charged with setting the fire.
