Giants Trim Plans For New Ballpark

With no fanfare, the San Francisco Giants have scrapped a portion of the plans for their new stadium.

A 35,000-square-foot, two-level brew pub and restaurant above the scoreboard was eliminated from the plans for Pac Bell Park, scheduled to open in April 2000.

A pedestrian arcade along one street also was eliminated, along with other portions of the park, totaling up to 200,000 square feet of the proposed 1 million-square-foot facility. The size of the playing field and number of seats will remain the same.

The changes were disclosed Tuesday in an addendum to the environmental impact report on the $262-million stadium project, being built in the China Basin area.

The Montreal Expos put catcher Darrin Fletcher on the 15-day disabled list and recalled Raul Chavez from their triple-A farm club.

Fletcher suffered a sprained ligament in his right ankle after a collision with Baltimore shortstop Mike Bordick in a play at the plate Tuesday night. He was hitting .287 with 10 homers in 43 games.

Chavez, 24, made his major league debut with the Expos last year, going one for five in four games.

The Colorado Rockies recalled shortstop Neifi Perez, along with right-handed pitcher Bryan Rekar, from triple-A Colorado Springs. Right-hander Jamey Wright and utility infielder Jason Bates were optioned to Colorado Springs.

Perez, hitting .363 with eight homers and 46 runs batted in at Colorado Springs, initially will get work at three infield positions.
