Page Bartelt, a former standout at Capistrano Valley High, defeated Maria Cole to advance on the first day of competition of the Toshiba Tennis Classic Opportunity tournament at Rancho San Clemente Tennis & Fitness Club.
Bartelt, 18, who attends Arizona State, won, 6-4, 6-2. Top-seeded Alexandra Stevenson of San Diego also advanced, beating Michelle Palmisano, 6-1, 6-0.

Three Fullerton College baseball players signed professional contracts, Fullerton Coach Nick Fuscardo announced.
Keith Jones, drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks, has reported to the Lethbridge Black Diamonds in Canada. Pitcher Chris Piersoll, drafted by the Chicago Cubs, has reported to the Mesa (Ariz.) Cubs. Erick Gomez was signed by Kansas City as a non-drafted free agent and reported to Gulf Coast.

Sean Mikkelsen has been hired to coach the Troy girls’ soccer team, the school announced. Mikkelsen, a 1988 graduate of Troy, played goalkeeper and defender for the Warriors and in college at Chapman.

Corona del Mar announced the hiring of Walid Khoury as girls’ soccer coach. Khoury is the brother of Newport Harbor boys’ soccer Coach Ziad Khoury.

Molli Mullen, a Newport Harbor High softball player recovering from cancer, will be a team captain in the American Cancer Society’s third Relay for Life fund-raiser Friday night at Orange Coast College.
Cancer Society officials hope the all-night marathon will raise $230,000. Teams are sponsored to run or walk 18 consecutive hours. The goal is for each participant to receive at least $100 in donations.
Mullen, a graduating senior, has Hodgkin’s disease. She will captain the team from the Children’s Hospital of Orange County, where she underwent chemotherapy treatments last year. Mullen, who also played field hockey, will attend Goldey-Beacom College in Wilmington, Del., in the fall on a softball scholarship.

Joe Garner of Saddleback College has signed a letter to play golf for Sacramento State. Garner, a former all-county player at El Toro High, played one year at Brigham Young before serving a two-year mission.

Nahum Renteria and Darin Reintjes, both from Cypress College, have signed to play baseball at four-year schools, Renteria with Southern Mississippi and Reintjes with Cal Poly Pomona, said Alan Lombardi of Cypress College.
Renteria played second base and carried a batting average of .265. He had 28 RBIs and scored 27 runs in 53 games. Reintjes, a right-hand pitcher, was 5-0 in 1997 with one save. He had an ERA average of 2.51.

Clyde Vaughan, Long Beach State’s lead assistant men’s basketball coach, has been named the school’s director of recruiting.
Vaughan, a five-year 49er assistant, signed most of the program’s recruits this season. Long Beach has a record of 89-55 during Vaughan’s tenure.

Five Orange County athletes are scheduled to compete for the U.S. team in Israel at the 15th World Maccabiah Games, beginning July 14 in Tel Aviv.
Representing the county will be Dana Bennish of Huntington Beach (volleyball), Joshua Frauman of Lake Forest (track and field), Doug Gottlieb of Orange (basketball), Art Ross of Newport Beach (tennis) and Rachel Wacholder of Laguna Beach (volleyball).
Closing ceremonies will occur July 24 outside Jerusalem.
