Zoo Elephants

Annie is only the most recent premature elephant death at the L.A. Zoo (June 16). In the past 27 years, 24 elephants have come to the zoo--11 have died there--none of old age or natural causes. Others have been sold to circuses or dealers.
With these statistics the zoo cannot claim to be making a contribution toward elephant conservation, education or welfare. Without that role the elephant exhibit should be closed and the remaining four elephants placed in a sanctuary, where they can roam on grass, not stand still on cement slabs.

* Is it any wonder there are escapes? After all, the zoo is a prison for animals, where all the inmates are innocent.
