Stop Sign Vandals
To “let the punishment fit the crime” is not severe enough in some cases. Vandalism comes to my mind, and three crimes in point are: graffiti, mail box bashing and the recent case in Florida, where the deliberate removal of a stop sign by teenagers subsequently was the cause of three deaths in a car accident (June 11).
Society should not have to put up with this energy-draining behavior. The punishment for these and similar acts should be twice, or 10 times, or some measure greater than a slap on the wrist. These are acts where punishment harsh enough to deter others is called for. Excuses such as “youthful exuberance” or a “bad home environment” have no place in this argument.
