Ceremony to Honor Shrine Built by Chinese

A ceremony in Boyle Heights today will commemorate the restoration of the 19th century Chinese Memorial Shrine, considered the earliest surviving structure built by the Chinese in Los Angeles.
The shrine, constructed in 1888, is located in Evergreen Cemetery and consists of an altar and twin kilns for burning sacred items. It has not been used since 1965 and has gradually deteriorated. The Chinese Historical Society purchased the monument from Evergreen Cemetery in 1992.
