More than 4,000 doctors, nurses, social workers and other state-employed members of the Service Employees International Union went on a one-day strike after a breakdown in contract talks. Pickets were up at state prisons, hospitals, mental health centers and nursing homes as the union’s first 24-hour strike took hold at 6:45 a.m. EDT, a union spokeswoman said. Union leaders said members authorized a strike of one day per two-week pay period, but it could escalate to a longer walkout if progress is not made. No talks were scheduled.
