Rose Says He Will Apply for Reinstatement Soon

Pete Rose, banned from baseball in 1989 because of gambling, told the CBS SportsLine on-line service that he plans to apply for reinstatement, perhaps within a week.
According to the Cincinnati Post, Rose also may manage the Cincinnati Reds again.
That part of the story is not exactly true, said Red General Manager Jim Bowden.
Bowden said that he told Sportsline that if Rose should apply for reinstatement, and if baseball should honor his request, and if Rose should express an interest in managing the Reds, Bowden said he would interview the all-time hits leader “along with all other qualified candidates.”
The Reds’ job may or may not even be open depending on whether interim Manager Jack McKeon, who replaced Ray Knight on July 25, is retained.

Dodger second baseman Tripp Cromer, who is eligible to come off the disabled list next Friday, is not ready to start throwing the ball because of some lingering pain in the tendon he strained near his right elbow.
The Dodgers don’t plan on letting Cromer throw until he tells them the pain is completely gone.
Said Cromer: “I may have to lie.”

Ramon Martinez will make his third rehabilitation start with Class-A San Bernardino tonight against San Jose. . . . Pitching coach Dave Wallace plans to show Hideo Nomo videotape of himself in order to give the pitcher a better idea of the the mechanical problems he had developed, problems that have caused Nomo to struggle in his last two games. “Sometimes a pitcher can’t feel it,” Wallace said, “so you have to show it to him.”

* Update--With left-hander Pete Schourek on the disabled list because of a sore elbow, the decimated Reds’ pitching staff must offer up left-hander White, who is in his eighth year of professional ball, but only his third at the major league level. His previous experience was with the Montreal Expos, where he was 2-3 with a 6.57 ERA. Valdes won his only other start this year against the Reds, beating them, 2-1, at Cincinnati.
