Odor Near Port Is Natural, Harmless, Officials Say

The foul odor that blanketed communities near the Port of Los Angeles late Thursday and Friday morning was nothing more than a natural smell from the harbor, police said.
Los Angeles Police Sgt. John Ferguson said that several residents complained of bad smells Thursday night in the San Pedro and Wilmington areas. He said that police investigated the odor at 6:30 a.m. Friday and, although they were unable to identify the odor or where it was coming from, they determined it was harmless.
“Every once in a while that smell just pops up down here,” said Ferguson, who said it was a sulfur-like odor. “But’s it’s natural, it’s not coming from toxic chemicals. It’s nothing major.”
A spokesman for the Port of Los Angeles said no complaints about an odor had been received.
