The director of corporate relations at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has been appointed UC Irvine’s vice chancellor of university advancement, with responsibilities for boosting private fund-raising and forging relationships with business.
The selection of Thomas R. Moebus, 49, was approved by the university’s Board of Regents on Thursday. He will be paid $165,000 annually, starting Dec. 1.
At MIT, Moebus headed the largest university-based corporate relations program in higher education, UCI officials said. His office was responsible for half of the $150 million from corporations that MIT received last fiscal year.
At UCI, Moebus said, he will reach out to Pacific Rim firms to sustain the university’s increasing private support. Last year, such revenue increased 18%, to $30.2 million.
Moebus replaces Jerry Mandel, who left July 1 to become president of the Orange County Performing Arts Center.
