Citizen Academy Offers Glimpse of Police Work

The Redondo Beach Police Department is gearing up to begin its eighth Citizen Police Academy today, an 11-week program that attempts to expose residents to the day-to-day duties of officers.

Participants get a firsthand view of law enforcement by attending lectures from canine officers and the SWAT team. They also get a chance to visit a crime scene, go on a ride-along, tour police facilities and learn how to fire a gun.

The program was started three years ago in an attempt to make citizens more aware of what the police do, said Officer Ed Jackson, the academy coordinator. Jackson said the program has led many graduates to become volunteers at the department and improved community policing programs.

“We’ve had overwhelming success with the program,” Jackson said.

The sessions, which take place Thursdays from 6 to 9 p.m., are free. Redondo Beach residents are given preference.
