BYU Chooses Quarterback

Paul Shoemaker was named Brigham Young new starting quarterback, Coach LaVell Edwards saying he played a hunch in making the choice. Shoemaker, 23, a redshirt junior who backed up Steve Sarkisian last year, beat out Kevin Feterik, a sophomore with a strong, accurate arm. . . . Richard “Babe” Tysseling, a coach at Central College from 1937 to 1960, died after a long illness in Pella, Iowa. He was 86. . . . Last season, Oregon rushed for 310 yards--Saladin McCullough accounting for 223 yards and five touchdowns--in a 49-31 victory over Arizona. Tonight, the Wildcats go to Eugene, Ore., tonight for a Pacific 10 Conference game against the Ducks and McCullough. Eight defensive starters return for Arizona, led by senior defensive tackle Joe Salave’a.
