20 Seniors Wanted to Aid Fire Inspectors

Launching a program that encourages senior citizens to work with fire inspectors, the city is seeking 20 volunteers.
Their mission will be to assist the Fire Department in inspecting new businesses to make sure they comply with codes. The volunteers also will do complimentary safety checks of homes.
The program, the Fire Inspection Reserve Seniors Task Force, emphasizes the importance of smoke detectors, fire extinguishers, swimming pool safety, first aid and emergency preparedness.
Its goals are to educate the community about fire safety, involve seniors in the fire service and ensure safe businesses and homes, Fire Chief Bernard F. Heimos said.
Applications are available at City Hall, 10200 Slater Ave. Kathy Williams is the program coordinator.
