Injuries, Losses Pile Up for Matador Women

The Cal State Northridge women’s soccer team (0-4) is not only coming up short on the scoreboard, it’s taking a physical beating.
Freshmen midfielder Kim Irwin is out for at least three weeks with a knee injury and freshmen midfielder Karla Jara is out indefinitely with an injured ankle.
Forward Heather Schou has struggled to overcome off-season foot surgery and forward-midfielder Marilyn Huschka is nursing an injured quadriceps muscle, as is forward Amy Gill, who injured an ankle Sunday against UC Irvine.
Also in that match, defender Abby Beahan took an elbow to the chest and, after two plays that led to Anteater goals, came off the field struggling to breath.
“It was like she suddenly became asthmatic,” Coach Brian Wiesner said. “She thought she’d only gotten the wind knocked out of her but even after the game she couldn’t catch her breath or laugh.”
Not that there’s much cause for the latter around the Matadors.
Grounded: Cal State Northridge’s 11 yards rushing in a 34-21 loss at Hawaii on Saturday was the third-lowest total in a game for the Matadors since moving up to Division I-AA in 1993.
Northridge’s all-time low was minus-35 yards in a 28-23 loss to Southwest Texas State in 1994.
For the record: An item in Wednesday’s Between the Lines omitted the following names in a list of first-year varsity head coaches: Jim Bonds of Alemany, Ray De Shane (Lancaster), Al Durham (First Lutheran), Anthony Harris (Campbell Hall), Scott McRitchie (Buckley), Steve Page (St. Genevieve), Dennis Stephanson (Grace Brethren), Jeff Trovatten (Landmark West), Ron Veras (Simi Valley) and Sidney Ware (Kilpatrick).
