Buena’s Depth Wins in the Channel

Cathy Dunne placed fifth and Sarah Paine finished seventh to pace Buena High to victory in the first Channel League girls’ cross-country meet of the season at Dos Pueblos High on Wednesday.
Dunne clocked 20:04 over the three-mile course and Paine timed 20:13 for the Bulldogs, who had their league title streak stopped at 13 last year.
Melissa Niednagel placed ninth in 20:34 and Amy Golden was 10th in 20:35 for Buena, which had five runners in the top 14.
In other girls’ cross-country meets:
Golden League Meet No. 1--Quartz Hill, paced by winner Danielle Day, took five of the top six places to easily win at the Rancho Vista course in Lancaster.
Day clocked 19:38 over the three-mile course to help the Rebels to a 19-67 victory over Highland.
Agoura-Oak Park Invitational--Freshmen Laura Jakosky and Brooke Cockrell and sophomore Laurel Casey of Agoura finished 1-2-3 for the Chargers in a 32-48 victory over Westlake in the six-team meet at Oak Canyon Park.
BOYS’ CROSS-COUNTRY
Agoura-Oak Park Invitational--Adam Pearlman, Mike Berns and Brian Harrison of Agoura placed third, fourth and fifth to help the Chargers to a 31-49 victory over Oak Park in the seven-team meet at Oak Canyon Park.
GIRLS’ TENNIS
Peninsula 12, Harvard-Westlake 6--No. 1 singles player Marissa Irvin won her three sets for the Wolverines (3-2) in a nonleague match at Peninsula.
Peninsula (5-1), which won all nine doubles sets, is the six-time defending Southern Section Division I champion.
