Team Toughens Up With Severyn

General Manager Jack Ferreira, who struck out in the free-agent sweepstakes for physical defenseman Luke Richardson, landed hard-hitting defenseman Brent Severyn in Sunday’s waiver draft.
Severyn led the Colorado Avalanche with 193 penalty minutes last season.
He also had one goal and five points in 66 games.
“He’s a guy we really wanted because he fits our situation,” assistant general manager David McNab said. “We talked to Colorado [about trading for him] last year and this year. He adds another dimension.”
Adding Severyn gives the Ducks the size and nastiness they lacked from their defensive corps the past few seasons.
The Ducks expect Severyn to join them for their opener Friday against the Vancouver Canucks in Tokyo.

Kevin Todd, left unprotected by the Ducks, was not selected in the draft. The Ducks put Todd, who was struck in the eye by a puck in Wednesday’s exhibition, on the injured reserve list Sunday. . . . Peter LeBoutillier, Mike Leclerc, Barry Nieckar and Pavel Trnka were assigned to the Ducks’ minor league affiliate at Cincinnati.
