No. 1 Irvin Advances to Quarterfinals

Top-seeded Marissa Irvin of Harvard-Westlake High overcame a slow start Tuesday to advance to the quarterfinals of the Easter Bowl Junior Tennis Championships in Palm Springs.
Meanwhile, top-seeded Nicholas Weiss of Calabasas, the nation’s top-ranked player in boys’ 16, lost in straight sets to ninth-seeded Evan Austin of Naples, Fla., 6-3, 6-1.
In other action in boys’ 16, Ryan Redondo of Ojai defeated Chris Wettengel of Bentonville, Ark., 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, and Travis Rettenmaier of Camarillo lost to Tres Davis of Lubbock, Texas, 6-2, 6-4.
After losing the first set, 6-3, Irvin bounced back and dominated 10th-seeded Katie Granson of Bethlehem, Pa., 6-0, 6-1, to advance.
“In the second set, I stepped it up and she got a little nervous,” Irvin said. “The level of my game kept rising.”
Glendale resident Maureen Diaz, third-seeded in girls’ 16, defeated Erin Burdette of Jackson, Ga., 6-3, 6-0, in quarterfinal action.
