Wright’s Wrongs

Regarding “On the Wright Track in Arizona,” Nov. 8): I am irked by the suggestion that Frank Lloyd Wright paid attention to environmental practicalities. As anyone who has visited his “Fallingwater” house near Uniontown, Pa., knows, he was notoriously indifferent to the effects of rain on roofs. Indeed, he is quoted as saying “that’s how you can tell it’s a roof” to clients who complained of leaks.
I have visited several Wright buildings and never cease to be amazed at his disregard for the comfort of their denizens--for example, the lack of provision for double windows at the original Taliesen in Wisconsin, where it does get a bit cold in the winter--as well as the possibility that they may want to influence their living spaces.
