Prize Eludes Glendale Again

GLENDALE — After losing in the championship game of two previous men’s basketball tournaments, Glendale College was hoping this time would be different.

But Western State Conference rival Bakersfield had other ideas in a 69-66 victory over the Vaqueros on Saturday night in the championship game of the Glendale tournament at Glendale College.

“It’s just unfortunate how it ended,” Coach Brian Beauchemin of Glendale said. “Maybe we’re marked for bridesmaids.”

The biggest problem for the Vaqueros (9-4), ranked 17th in the state, was 6-foot-6 1/2, 255-pound center Shawn Daniels, who finished with 29 points and 12 rebounds and was named the tournament’s most valuable player.

Bakersfield (12-2), ranked No. 15, overcame a 37-32 halftime deficit and opened a 65-56 lead with 3:48 remaining. But it wasn’t until Mark Caguioa missed a desperation three-point shot at the buzzer that the Renegades were home free.

Tony Hoggatts finished with 16 points, and Steve Eernisse and Chris Moreland each had 13 for Glendale.

Clayton Powdrill scored 19 points for Bakersfield.

Canyons 80, Citrus 70--Reserve Keith Cooley scored all 10 of his points in the last five minutes to spark the Cougars to a come-from-behind victory for third place at Glendale.

The Cougars trailed, 44-35, at halftime and Citrus (5-9) led, 61-48, midway through the second half.

Anthony Ellison had 18 points and six rebounds for Canyons (8-7). Charles Madison added 15 points and Eurskine Robinson had 14.
