CARLSBAD, Calif. — The 17-year-old son of a woman found stuffed inside the trunk of the family car alongside her longtime companion was questioned by police Saturday.
The boy was taken into custody at 1 p.m. Saturday after a friend of his called and told investigators the teenager wanted to speak with authorities, Carlsbad Police Lt. Joe Hasenauer said.
Investigators were still interviewing the boy Saturday evening. He was not arrested or booked for investigation.
Autopsies on Carol Dreyer, 49, and Gary Engleman, 52, were expected to be completed today. The two were killed sometime Thursday or Friday.
“They appeared to have been stabbed by another person,” said Charles Kelley, a San Diego County coroner’s investigator.
The 17-year-old had not been seen since he was treated at Scripps Memorial Hospital in nearby Encinitas for cuts to his left hand about an hour after the bodies were discovered in the family garage Friday, Hasenauer said.
A neighbor told police the couple had been having problems with the teenager.
