A community walkathon to support victims of a typhoon that ravaged southern Vietnam raised $123,082, local organizers recently announced.
Nearly 5,000 people came out for the fund-raiser, held two weeks ago in Mile Square Regional Park. The marchers were mostly young Vietnamese Americans active in community groups and church.
“It made me feel really good that the young people are still concerned for the people back home,” said group leader Chi Nguyen, who worked with two dozen youth groups in organizing the event.
During a small midafternoon ceremony, walkathon organizers turned over the money to a Red Cross representative, after a moment of silence for the 3,700 people killed.
