June Ballot to Include Council Term Limits

Residents will have a chance to limit council members to three terms under a ballot proposal approved this week by the City Council.
The measure will be placed on the June 2 ballot. If approved, the term limits would not start for incumbent council members until their next election.
A special committee composed of council members Tom Potocki and Sherri M. Butterfield said residents signaled their preference for at least a three-term limit when they voted Councilman William S. Craycraft into office for a third time in 1996.
After the third term, a former council member will be required to wait 365 days before being allowed to run in another city election.
One resident, Milt Jacobsen, told the council he favored two-term limits.
“I’m disappointed, and the people of Mission Viejo will be disappointed you didn’t come up with two-term limitations,” he said.
