LOS ALAMITOS — Support is growing for a proposal to reopen a swimming pool at the Armed Forces Reserve Center, officials said.
The City Council today is expected to review its first public report on the matter, responding to demand for a second community pool in addition to the one at Los Alamitos High School.
Representatives from Los Alamitos, Rossmoor, Cypress and Seal Beach met with base commanders to discuss plans to reopen the pool.
“There’s certainly limited 50-meter facilities in the area,” said Mark Wagner, recreation manager for Los Alamitos. “From a competitive aspect, there’s definitely a demand for that kind of facility.”
Wagner said the city is still analyzing costs, liability and the potential for corporate sponsorship. The pool was last used in 1996 by the U.S. Water Polo Federation for Olympic training but needs renovations that could cost as much as $300,000.
The City Council meets at 7 p.m. in City Hall, 3191 Katella Ave.
