Council Seeks to Bar Newport Coast Pupils

The City Council will recommend at its meeting today that the Laguna Beach Unified School District deny enrollment of up to 400 new students expected in the district because of development along the Newport Coast.
Because the developed land is expected to be annexed to Newport Beach, the children living there should attend Newport schools, Laguna Beach City Manager Kenneth C. Frank said.
“The City Council is very concerned about a sense of community,” Frank said. “It doesn’t make sense for kids who live in Newport Beach to go to Laguna Beach schools.”
For months, the school board has grappled with whether to enroll the students. Parents in Laguna Beach oppose the move, fearing that an influx of students would result in overcrowding.
The council meeting will be at 6 p.m. in the council chambers at City Hall.
