Choices for Chief of Schools Down to 6

Simi Valley school trustees have narrowed their search for a new superintendent from 25 candidates to six.
The finalists--whom officials declined to name--were chosen this week and will begin a second round of interviews.
The Simi Valley Unified School District has been overseen by interim Supt. Ken Moffett since April, but board members plan to find a permanent replacement by the end of summer.
Next week, the finalists will face a 14-member panel made up of teachers, parents and administrators in addition to the full board of trustees.
“This has been a very in-depth process that I’m pleased with,” said trustee Carla Kurachi. “We have candidates with broad-based experience, who have led innovative programs and have excellent overall backgrounds.”
A screening committee--which included Moffett, representatives from the California School Board Assn. and superintendents from Oak Park and Oceanside--helped trustees select the finalists.
“They had excellent answers for who they did and didn’t select,” Kurachi said.
