Group Will Offer Literacy Program

El Centrito de La Colonia, a nonprofit community organization, will launch the fourth session of the Early Childhood Literacy Program on Aug. 10 in the La Colonia neighborhood.
Children 4 to 6 years old can attend free weekday classes from noon to 1:30 p.m.
Funded with a grant from the James Irvine Foundation and the Ventura County Community Foundation, the program allows children to spend 15 minutes a day on a computer with the Waterford Early Reading Program, educational software designed to provide the skills needed to become a reader. The computer time is supplemented by group projects and story time, among other things.
Cal Lutheran University is conducting a three-year independent evaluation to determine if the program can improve the education of participants.
