Ex-Mayor of Beijing Faces Graft Charges

Prosecutors have brought corruption charges against former Beijing Mayor Chen Xitong, the highest Communist official ever exposed to a graft scandal, a prosecution official said. Chen’s case has been open since 1995, when he was purged from the party after the suicide of a protege under investigation in a $37-million embezzlement probe. The case is widely viewed as a litmus test of China’s willingness to tackle corruption within the top ranks of power.
