VENTURA — A 46-year-old man drove away from a traffic stop Wednesday and led police on a short chase that reached speeds of 90 mph before surrendering at the K mart shopping center on Victoria Avenue, authorities said.
Rudolpho Ramos Barretto of Ventura was being booked Wednesday night on suspicion of evading arrest, possession of a knife that forms into brass knuckles, resisting arrest and possession and transportation of drugs, police said.
During the chase, officers saw something tossed from Barretto’s car that was later determined to be a quarter ounce of heroin, police said.
About 2:40 p.m., officers stopped Barretto on the northbound Ventura Freeway near the Telephone Road offramp. He fled after not being able to produce a vehicle registration and proof of insurance, police said.
The chase through busy city streets lasted less than two miles, police said. There were no injuries.
