School Choice

Don’t know if I am the only one to notice this coincidence of two reports: “Stepchild of Secular Turkey” (June 11) quotes the Islamic fundamentalists, about religious control of education, as only wanting “freedom of choice” and their opposition saying that the logical extension is “the dictates of religion.”
The Times also reports (June 11) the Wisconsin Supreme Court as wanting only “freedom of choice” for the people who would receive government vouchers for their school of choice, those being primarily religious schools.
Seems as if the same fundamentalist drive to eliminate public schools is alive and well in several parts of the world.
