Ruling Delayed on Parks’ Denial of Gun Permits

A Superior Court judge postponed a ruling Friday on whether Los Angeles Police Chief Bernard C. Parks is refusing to issue concealed weapons permits in violation of a court-ordered judgment.
Superior Court Judge Alan G. Buckner scheduled a July 24 hearing to determine whether Parks, the LAPD and the city of Los Angeles are satisfying the terms of the court-approved agreement, which ended a 17-year ban on issuing such permits and spelled out who is entitled to them.
A group of residents who previously held concealed weapons permits but recently had their renewal requests denied by Parks contend that he is violating the intent of the 1994 agreement.
Deputy City Atty. Byron Boeckman said the chief reviews each application on a case-by-case basis and has done nothing wrong.
Since taking office, Parks has rejected most of the applications for concealed weapons permits.
