Rep. James Rogan

Re “Valley Perspective Interview: James Rogan,” March 15.
Congressman James Rogan’s comments about the current tax system were absolutely astounding. He stated that he favors “a national sales tax . . . that’s the fairest. Those who consume the most will pay the most.”
Now that’s Republican family values for you. If you want to feed and house and otherwise provide for your children, you’re going to pay more to do it. Forget those troublesome deductions for dependents and do the patriotic thing--pay up.
Excuse me, but isn’t that the exact opposite of what Rogan’s fellow Republicans have been advocating? Do we encourage or discourage families?
He further states that such a system would bring in “untold hundreds of billions of dollars from what is now an underground economy.” And what example does he use? “Even dope dealers have to go to the grocery store.” I don’t know where Rogan buys his food, but in California there is no tax on food at grocery stores. Is he actually advocating creating such a tax? I guess so, and of course the more mouths you’ve got at home the more Rogan wants you to pay.
Perhaps the good people of Glendale will not return this fellow to Washington.
