Pepperdine Can’t Hold Court; Ohio State Wins

The homecourt advantage did not help the Pepperdine men’s volleyball team Tuesday night.
The Waves were defeated, 16-14, 13-15, 16-14, 15-9, by Ohio State in front of a crowd of 602, which could knock Pepperdine from the top spot in the coaches’ poll.
George Roumain had 37 kills and 13 errors in 69 attempts for a .353 attack percentage for Pepperdine (14-3), and added seven digs and seven blocks.
Scott Wong had 22 kills, Rick Tune contributed 17 kills and eight blocks while Chris Jacobson finished with 15 kills and one error in 20 attempts for a .700 percentage. Jacobson also had 11 digs.
Jose Rivera had 27 kills and Jeff Koterba added 20 kills for the fifth-ranked Buckeyes (19-1).
Pepperdine committed 17 service errors to Ohio State’s nine.
BASEBALL
USC 11, Pepperdine 1--Wes Rachels had a double and three runs batted in and Jeremy Freitas and Brad Ticehurst each added two RBIs to help the No. 2-ranked Trojans (24-5) defeat Pepperdine (17-14) at Dedeaux Field.
Pepperdine starter Richard Sundstrom (0-2) lasted 3 2/3 innings, giving up eight hits and five runs, four of them earned, while walking three and striking out two.
Ticehurst collected three hits and scored twice for USC. Craig Jones (2-1) went five innings, giving up two hits and no runs while striking out nine and walking two.
The Master’s 18, Menlo 0--Matt Berry and Josh Carrington combined on a four-hitter for Master’s (19-5) in a nonconference game at Menlo (8-8).
Berry pitched seven innings, allowing two hits while striking out 12 and walking one.
Rob Avila had two hits, driving in four runs and scoring twice for the Mustangs.
Menlo reliever Duane Ito hit five batters during an 11-run ninth inning.
Oxnard 8, Valley 7--The Condors (16-5, 9-2) scored two runs in the 10th on three hits and a walk in a Western State Conference game at Oxnard.
After Valley scored once on a throwing error in the top of the 10th to break a 6-6 tie, Oxnard’s Shawn Fossen singled home the tying run and Jack Wilson singled in Fossen with the winning run.
Glendale 19, Ventura 7--Freddy Sanchez had two doubles, a triple, a single, scored three runs and had three runs batted in for Glendale (16-8, 8-3) in a WSC interdivisional game at Ventura that was called after seven innings because of the 12-run rule.
Adrian Gascon had four hits and two RBIs for Ventura (6-13, 3-9), which committed seven errors.
SOFTBALL
Pierce 8, Glendale 1--Marcia Gonzalez (3-1) pitched a two-hitter with nine strikeouts, and Jessie Leivo had three hits, including a double, and drove in two runs for the Brahmas (8-5, 3-0) in a WSC South Division game at Scholl Canyon Park.
Bakersfield 6, Canyons 0--Cristal Brown had three hits for Bakersfield (14-10-1, 3-0) in a WSC South Division game at Canyons.
Andrea Wintermute had a double for Canyons (5-10, 1-2), which was outhit, 8-4.
Valley 15, Santa Monica 4--Norma Dorado drove in five runs with three hits for Valley (10-6, 2-1) in a WSC South Division game at Santa Monica that was called after six innings.
Gina Perez (2-1) pitched a three-hitter, striking out two and walking five.
GOLF
Southwestern Intercollegiate Invitational--Pepperdine tied for eighth and Cal State Northridge placed 11th among 13 teams in the 54-hole tournament at North Ranch Country Club.
Andy Walker of Pepperdine took third place with a one-over-par 214 and Charles Whitely tied for 12th at 221 for the Waves, who finished at 898, 36 strokes behind champion Arizona State.
Anthony Marciano shot a 222 and placed 15th for Northridge, which scored 913.
