Mendoza Takes Moorpark Post

Gil Mendoza, a former Moorpark College baseball coach, said Monday he accepted the position of softball coach at the school, replacing De Dow.
Westlake Coach Darwin Tolzin and his longtime assistant, Darrell Joint, will join Mendoza’s staff, Mendoza said. Tolzin, who turned down a head coaching position at Valley College, last week resigned at Westlake.
GOLF
New Matador: Cal State Northridge has signed Rick Metz of Overton, Nev. Metz’s brother, Roger, was a Matador golfer in the early 1990s.
BASKETBALL
Coach chosen: Tom Strasburger has been named girls’ coach at Thousand Oaks High.
Strasburger replaces Chuck Brown, who retired in February after leading the Lancers to two Southern Section championships and 319 victories in 16 seasons.
Strasburger coached the junior varsity team at Thousand Oaks the past 10 seasons.
McKay commits: Former Alemany High girls’ player Kelly McKay has signed to play at San Francisco State. McKay played at Cuesta College the past two seasons.
TRACK AND FIELD
College commitment: Wendy Chan of Taft High, who finished third in the 800 meters in the 1997 City Section championships, has committed to UC Irvine.
