Matador Women Lead in Big Sky Track Meet

Cal State Northridge’s Beth Burton, Christina Tolson and Cheree Hicks finished 1-2-3 in the shot put and the Matador women lead the Big Sky Conference track and field championships after six events at Stewart Stadium at Weber State University.
Burton, a senior, set a meet record with her mark of 54 feet 8 3/4 inches, which topped 51-3 by Anna Soderberg of Northern Arizona last year. Burton’s mark also betters a Northridge school record of 53-7, shared by Burton and Tolson.
The sophomore Tolson’s second-place mark was 51-1 3/4 and Cheree Hicks, another sophomore, finished third with a mark of 50-3 1/2.
Behind the top-three sweep in the shot put, Northridge leads the meet with 46 points, just ahead of second-place Weber State with 45 1/2 points and Idaho State with 44 1/2 points.
The Northridge women received a fourth-place finish in the long jump by LaTanya Collier (18-8 3/4). Jen Capehart (10-9 1/2) and Maggie O’Malley (10-5 1/2) finished fourth and fifth, respectively, for the Matadors in the pole vault.
The Northridge men are in fifth place after seven events with 26 points.
