Joe Nieuwendyk’s goal seven seconds into the game--the fastest in franchise history--started the Dallas Stars to a 5-1 victory over the Red Wings Friday at Detroit in a matchup of last season’s Western Conference finalists.
Nieuwendyk also had two assists in a four-goal first period for the Stars, who improved to 2-0 this season against the two-time defending Stanley Cup champion Red Wings.
Goaltender Ed Belfour made 34 saves for Dallas, but Detroit’s Chris Osgood gave up four goals on 14 first-period shots before Kevin Hodson replaced him to start the second. Hodson finished with 13 saves.
New Jersey 4, Pittsburgh 3--Randy McKay scored his second goal of the game with 5:07 to play to lead the Devils at East Rutherford, N.J., in referee Paul Stewart’s first NHL game since his battle with colon cancer.
Colorado 8, Tampa Bay 1--Joe Sakic had a five-point game, including the 900th of his career, and Peter Forsberg and Adam Deadmarsh each had two goals to lead the Avalanche at Denver.
N.Y. Rangers 3, Boston 3--Dmitri Khristich scored with 1:22 remaining in the third period to help the Bruins tie at New York, despite two goals by the Rangers’ John MacLean.
