Mexico Wins Relief ’98 Opener, 2-0

Luis Hernandez and Oscar Mascorro scored to give Mexico a 2-0 victory over El Salvador at the Coliseum on Tuesday night in the opener of a soccer tournament designed to aid Central American victims of Hurricane Mitch.
The first game of Project Soccer Relief ’98 drew nearly 35,000. Proceeds will go to CARE, an international relief agency.
Hurricane Mitch left five million Central Americans living under emergency conditions and killed between 8,000 and 12,000, according to CARE.
CONCACAF, the federation that governs soccer in North and Central America and the Caribbean, organized the tournament in conjunction with CARE.
Guatemala played Honduras in Tuesday night’s second game. The championship and third-place games will be tonight.
